Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Discover the secrets of silk ribbon embroidery, which can be mastered by all level and abilities
With Ann Stephens

You and your group  will love this charming way to embellish and embroider. You will learn various hand embroidery stitches which are the secret to sewing with silk ribbons. Under the expert tuition of English textile artist Ann Stephens, you will gradually build up a piece of work around circles, hearts and flower motifs. It is fun and satisfying to learn and discover the joys of creating with special silk ribbons. Specific needles and base fabrics are provided in our fully equipped, light and spacious atelier. Ann dyes most of the silk ribbons herself using local plants and sunshine.

Some people may look at silk ribbon embroidery and decide that it is far too hard to attempt. The finished results, delicate flowers, seem to comprise complex stitches that many home embroiderers feel is beyond their skill. They could not be more wrong!

Your piece will progress much faster using this silk ribbon technique compared to other forms of hand stitching. A whole piece can be worked in a day or two.

Why not try your hand at a contemporary version of a technique that originated in the 17th century and was the height of fashion in the 1920’s Downton Abbey era? The technique is still used in haute couture today.

Silk ribbon work is an ideal hand embroidery skill for making keepsakes for weddings, embellishing clothes and bags, cushions and evening wear. This is the ideal workshop for a long weekend, creative hen party or special get-together.

All levels and abilities find themselves drawn to Ann’s kind and enthusiastic teaching style. Since moving to rural France twelve years ago, Ann has concentrated on developing her own work, having spent many years encouraging the creativity in others, as Head of Art at a large and diverse college in Wales. Ann originally graduated in Fine Art. She trained in painting & printmaking under the tutelege of renowned artist Gillian Ayres at Winchester School of Art. Her textile work is exhibited and collected internationally.
