Lovers of colour will enjoy this original take on ‘African/French château’ fusion. This spacious ensuite room is decorated around a painting of an African Baobab tree by Nigerian artist Toni Okujeni. You will feel happy and energised by his colour sense: he inspired me to paint the walls green. Sink into the super-comfortable king size four-poster bed from Loberon, with upcycled bedside tables adding a pop of sky-blue contrast. You will sleep deeply in luxury bed linen mixed with vintage French linen sheets.

The handmade basket weaves above the bed come from a wonderful womens’ community project called Imadi World which I got to know very well while living in Senegal for four years. I picked up the beaded Mr and Mrs statues from a Dakar market stall. To keep you intrigued I have mixed and matched styles, so right beside African street art is my grandfather’s Georgian English secretaire with its drop front writing desk. There is a lovely appliqué artwork Tree of Life by textile artist Ann Stephens, who you may get to know well as she teaches many different textile and art techniques here at the château.

Gaze out of the south-facing windows over Pécile’s organic farmland, framed with curtains in Voyage Maison’s linen.

There is a polished mahogany Louis Philippe chest of drawers found in a flea market. On it is an alabaster candle-holder, a facsimile from the Valley of the Kings, brought home from our time in Egypt. It’s a lot of fun curating much-loved and eclectic treasures to delight visitors like yourself.

Tidy your luggage away in the walk-in cupboard. The ensuite contemporary bathroom has a walk-in shower, large bath and two basins. And a separate loo. Peep through the bathroom window you may see or hear a chorus of birds and wildlife: the resident green woodpecker, a flash of blue jay or the charming family of red squirrels who live in the ancient oak wood outside.

Mobility Note:

Lots of small steps and uneven ground are all part of the charm of this ancient site, so enjoy its idiosyncrasies as you wander around gently.
